What is the difference between a “faceted” cut and a “cabochon” cut?

Gem cutters (lapidaries) use different techniques depending on the stone’s optical properties and clarity:

  • Faceted Cut: The stone is cut with multiple flat geometric surfaces (facets) arranged in a specific pattern. This is used for clear stones like Diamonds and Sapphires to maximize their sparkle and light reflection.
  • Cabochon Cut: The stone is shaped and polished into a smooth, rounded dome with a flat base. There are no flat facets. This cut is used for opaque or heavily included stones, and it is strictly required to display optical effects like “Stars” or “Cat’s Eyes.”
